Saying that this year was successful would be a vast understatement. Before I joined this team, I vaguely heard about the multisensory room project in collaboration with NYU Dentistry. As someone who is interested in psychology, I quickly took interest in this project and was prompted to apply to EAT due to this. Upon joining, while exploring other projects that the VIP had to offer, I started to do my research on ways to incorporate light into a sensory experience. Eventually, I took notice that there were a couple of people who wanted to work on creating sensory rooms. So, I connected with them and started to work on launching an event.
The first event was a destressing art workshop, where participants would trace themselves on a large sheet of paper, cut it out, and color into it. With lighting, sound, and seating accommodation in mind, we hosted in one of the rooms in the Ability Project Suite. Although the event wasn’t as successful as we hoped it would be, it provided as a valuable learning experience for this semester.
One of the fundamental issues we had with the first event was that the room was too big and inaccessible to people not in the Ability Project. So, for this semester, we decided to take on an installation style of sensory experience in one of the phone booths. Along with that, we decided to add scent to the experience, which proved to be a large contributor to our success. With these in mind, amongst other small changes, we launched two installations this semester. The first one was successful but the outcome of the relaunch exceeded the previous event.
Overall, I am grateful to be presented with an opportunity to experiment with ways to provide pleasant and accommodative experiences. I am very proud of myself and my teammates who I could not have done it without.
